Cotton fields

Recently, we drove to Congaree National Park in Congaree, SC. It was grey out, so the bales of cotton wrapped in bright pink and yellow plastic stood out in the fields. Their unnatural color was a contrast to the otherwise pastoral landscape with the occasional tree and thousands of red-wind blackbirds. Turns out that small bits of pink and yellow find their way mixed in with the cotton, causing the crops to be considered “contaminated”. I wonder if we humans will ever be willing to make the commitment to reduce, significantly, our use of plastic?
